Did you know: Lactose is a great ingredient for sweet beer?
When I had just started working for Best Way Ingredients I noticed that Lactose was being sold regularly to brewers. That aroused my interest and made me ask myself ‘what are brewers doing with Lactose now ?’ So, I called one of our customers, Rock City Brewing in Amersfoort. There, I got Koen Overeem on the phone. After a brief introduction, Koen was happy to talk. He talked passionately about his brewery, pub-restaurant, and the Craft beers he brews. He made me curious and so I booked a table for my husband and I in September, to experience this company personally.
He wasn’t telling lies!

Good food complements good craft beer. We ordered our first beers, a Rock City burger, and the St. Louise style smoked ribs in the brewery pub-restaurant. Our drinks were smooth, and the food was tasty. We had a nice seat in the place, the music was not too loud, the staff were very friendly, and we had a view of the 21 beer taps, which made quite an impression.
After a good meal and tasty beers, we became curious about what Lactose is used for now. Lactose is a source of sugar from milk. Koen Overeem told us: “Normally, brewer’s yeast converts sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide, but they cannot do that with lactose. This makes Lactose a very popular sweetener for beers such as Milk Stouts and / or IPAs”.
